P800 calculation

my daughter has had the dreaded p800 tax calc.up to august last year she had been working 2 jobs-both for 2yrs + -at the same time .now she is told that she owes £385 tax.both employers have all her details as she was also paying NI.surely this is not down to her.since aug 2009 she got a full time job and paid tax as normal everything was ok.what can she do shes going mad? tia

For more on marking an answer as the "Best Answer", please visit our FAQ.It probably isn't her fault (assuming she wasn't get a full personal allowance from each employer in which case perhaps she should have noticed), but if she has benefitted from underpayments then HMRC will argue she should now pay it back. If someone has overpaid tax through no fault of their own they'd expect it back.
There is a letter that some sites say you can send to argue you should't have to repay, but I can't see it succeeding. Good luck though if you succeed.

A letter like that wouldn't succeed. As a taxpayer, you are supposed to assess the amount of tax you pay and inform HMRC if it is incorrect (how you're supposed to know this, god knows). They will never accept the 'my employer made the mistake'. They will always come back to you, the taxpayer, to pay it. Unfair, but true.
