charging for tap water in a restaurant

Can anyone tell me if it is leagel for a reataurant to charge for tap water, and is there any documention to support this or is it just down to each establishment to act as they see fit.

seeing as the water isnt free to them then of course they can charge for it if they want to.
Many may not as a goodwill gesture but they dont have to supply it free. the water costs them, the glass is supplied by them and cleaned, its poured by a member of staff so it costs the restaurant to provide it

I guess its up to the individual establishment, however, if you are paying what is to you a lot of money, the least you can expect is a glass of water without being charged.

The pub I go to will not even give you tap water, as decreed by the landlord.

I play pool on thurs at local club.
Same night upstairs are the line dancers.

They used to take pints of water upstairs and did not buy anything at the club.

The club starting charging 30p per glass, and the tight sods stopped drinking.


I would have chucked them out.

some places wont serve you tap water as they dont have a drinking water tap.if youre served you should pay for the service.or stay at home drink your own water.

i think it depends where you live i dont think london can drink tapwater ones i know drink bottled, come to wales and drink from the tap i think its all down to where your supplies come from , i am not being a bigot saying that just from what i know i have family in cornwall and remember the problems they had ,the council was giving them free bottled water because there tap water was contaminated

Geography is relevant to the answer.

It is a legal requirement in Scotland that "Tap water fit for drinking must be provided free of charge on request" on premises with a licence that authorises the sale of alcohol for consumption on the premises.

It seems to me now you get nothing for free. But charging for tap water is the last straw. The tap water is often very warm and tastes of bleach my answer would never eat there ever again on principles and the nerve of it.......

Tap water is not free. Bars, clubs restaurants are all on a water meter. That means they are charged, therefore you can be. If they serve alcohol then they should all have a licence.

Only if the customer buys a drink then they can have free tap water if they have this facility by law. If it warm then ask them to out ice in.

If you don’t buy anything, then you’re not a customer, you’re a waste of space and should go bother someone else.
