I'm a diabetic, have been for 30 years and unfortunately one of the things diabetics sometimes suffer from is Thrush, I may get an outbreak perhaps twice a year, I don't worry too much about it I go to my docs & he gives me a prescription for CANESTAN and it clears up in a couple of days.
Today I had the symptoms so while in town went into Boots the Chemist to purchase a tube of Canestan -- The girl behind the counter asked me how old I was!!!!!
When I asked why she said I can't sell it to you if you're over 60 ( I wasGobsmacked)
Company policy evidently.
Anyone else come accross this bureaucracy??

I'm a guy, maybe I shouldn't even be reading this but ...

Is the age limit on the Canestan? If so, it may just be Boots covering their bases.
I can see your point but its all to do with product licences. It is not licenced for patients over 60 so the assistant was just doing their job.
I've never heard anything like it, particularly as you can get a prescription from your GP. I'd love to know the answer to this one Jem.
I work in a chemist. Doctors tell patients to buy hydrocortisone cream for their face but were not allowed to sell it to them so send them back to the surgery. Its a crazy world
Under 16 or over 60: consult your doctor. It must be potentially dangerous if Big Pharma is knocking back your cash.
Hi Jem:

The official Canesten training document for pharmacy staff states:
"You would need to refer to the pharmacist if the customer . . .was under the age of 16 or over 60":
http://www.canesten.c...CustomerCareGuide.pdf

Perhaps Boots should be congratulated on ensuring that their staff know what they're doing?

Naznomad -- Guys get Thrush too, didn't you know.?

I know she was doing her job em, and very well too. You can see how old fashioned I am by not even knowing there was such a thing as goods under licence (only Booze)
I'll just have to see my doc tomorrow and sponge off the NHS.

Yes, i know ...but with the Brazilian Blowdry fresh in my mind, I was wary of posting. :-))
If you're over 60., isn't it free?
Look on the bright side jem At least you get it free :)

Yes jno it is free and being a diabetic one gets free prescriptions for life. Thats not the point, I was in town, I was in Boots, Knew what I wanted & decided rather than go through the appt regime I'd buy it.
From what I can make out yes indeed they were covering their backs. In older women self diagnosis can go all wrong and what I might know as Thrush may not be at all,soo got to get docs permission& thay then will dispence my prescription..

Naznomad -- You make me smile :o}

jem
yes indeed, it might not be thrush, it might be pigeon or even vulture, so best to check with your ornithologist. I mean doctor.
jno, that reminds me of this ... http://www.icuadelaid.../toon_larson_cows.jpg

Naz -- I see where you're coming from.(Titter)

Is that you?
no, I don't have yellow wings, except for a couple of weeks in autumn.
I was gonna say, nice green eyes and a healthy plumage, lol
I don't like my skull showing through, though - I may need to comb over.
