Another social network question

I've heard there is a discussion on Facebook which I would like to follow, though perhaps not take part in. I decided to sign on and have no objection to giving my name and age, but when it came to school attended, employment and a photograph (so my friends could be sure it's me they are talking to), I felt the whole thing was too intrusive and so didn't complete the information. What do others think about this and is it possible to access a particular page without actually participating?
