AVG every time. I don't like Avast for precisely the reason you have outlined.
I`m sorry, but I prefer Avast, and I don`t find it slow starting up at all, also I like the female voice which always informs me that Avast has been updated every time I switch on my PC.
Avast, no question. It doesn't slow down your computer. I switched to Avast when AVG decided it didn't like updating itself when used with Vista.
AVG always - I have Vista - no problem updating!
I gave up on AVG and Avast some time ago as they were causing me problems in relation to Windows Vista. I now use Microsoft Security Essentials which I find very good, and it's Freeware.
I have found Avira excellent and it is good on updating itself. For an extra free layer of security "Sandboxie" works well for me. It is in effect a vitual computer running inside your browser.
I had a similar problem as Naz with AVG and Vista, and now use Avira, which has been excellent so far.

What are you apologising for...?
If you have XP and want to use AVAST then you need to use AVAST 4 Home 4.2 version as the latest AVAST Antivirus 5 is slow to load due to a file in the scan engine called aswRdr.sys which has an issue with XP and takes up to 10 seconds to load . AWIL which owns AVAST are aware of this but do not consider it an issue. As it was written for Windows VISTA and Windows 7 the new version is good for these OS only. As for the announcement by the lady after the scan you can tutn that off. I would definately use Avast over AVG.
