Do they do it when it's 11am here or 11am where they are?

I think that Canada comes in for more than its fair share of stick. Although not exactly known for being a major player on the world stage (like Belgium), it stood loyally by Britain during both wars and still retains its affections for the Motherland, unlike its traitorous southern neighbour. I have yet to discern a strong movement for republicanism in Canada (apart from Quebec, but hey, you know what the Frenchies are like!). Given the republican movements in Oz and NZ, successive British governments of the 19C made very wise decisions. Send the criminals to the Antipodes, and the nice guys to Canada.

Actually Afghanistan is 3 hours ahead of GMT and the UK military out there 3.5 hours ahead of us.

The tragedy is that the armistice was signed at 5 a.m. GMT, to come into effect at 11 a.m., thus giving 6 hours in which a few more hapless souls would die to satisfy the generals' ego in gaining a paltry few extra inches of land..

mike, I beieve criminals were originally sent to the USA (as it then wasn't) - Georgia was meant to be a penal colony. After the Americans ended this arrangement, Australia was used instead. New Zealand wasn't.

I feel they needed a little time for the order to reach all units at the front.
1100 was chosen for it's poetic value, so maybe it could've occurred sooner.
Once the order had been given to stop firing there was crescendo of shelling from both sides in the time leading up to it.
Isolated German pockets carried on shooting for a while after also, sad.
