OK ive never had to claim on contents insurance before but we have been insured through AXA for 16 years on a new for old and accidental damage policy

Little CRX managed to break our TV the other day and so we are having to claim

The TV is a JVC and was a top of range one 2 years ago. They no longer make that model but the latest equivalent is still at £1400-£1500

The insurers have sent our details to one of these companies that supplys products against claims and they are only offering an LG tv costing £500

is this right or can we start fighting for the JVC quivalent?

ah but we wanted JVC, vibes, if id wanted a £500 LG tv then id have not even bothered with the insurance claim lol

the AXA site isnt helping much with what they class to be a "new for old" cover
id take the money and run, or go down the pub and spend it!
New for old just means they have to replace it with an equivalent TV and although I would argue with them (especially if this is their first offer) it's perfectly possible that a brand new £500 TV will be of equivalent spec to a couple of years old £1500 TV.
Question Author
but wouldnt it at least need to be the same make, Chuck?
Question Author
ive found one company selling old stock of the one we had at £1000 plus delivery
no, just has to have the same specs
No not at all. it just has to be an equivalent.

sounds wrong to me, lol

What exactly is it in the last two years tv's have fallen immensly in price. I am not saying that you shoouldn't get what your insured for, but the new tele might be exacly the same spec.

If your not happy write and say you will be contacting the insurance ombudsman that normly "gee's" them up a bit.
You can try telling AXA that you've found the exact same TV still for sale as I believe they are required to replace it with the same TV if possible. but if the same model is not available anywhere then it does just need to be a matching spec TV.

If they persist in saying they want to pay out with the LG then go through the specs carefully and compare them with the JVC, if the LG is significantly below the specs of the JVC in any way then you have a reason to refuse it, if it matches or exceeds all the specs you've not really got a leg to stand on.
You are entitled to have an equivalent replacement TV redcrx. If the LG tv that they are offering does not have all the features which your JVC has then you need to argue the point with the Insurance Company. What they offer you may cost more or less than your original but it should be of similar size and be 'Like for Like' and be very similar to JVC but not necessarily same Model.

haha, now weve complained theyve suddenly decided that they want to send Comet out to inspect it sometime in next 2 weeks.

I know people (me included) complain about insurane increasing every year due to people fiddling the system but i do wonder how they manage it lol
Question Author
yey.
After battling for a couple of weeks and being offered unsuitable TVs we have finally agreed to accept payment for the same model as we had before (we found it for sale locally)>. Much better than the £500 they were offering at first too :)

so, now to decide if we upgrade or stick with what we know.
