Laptop not starting up

My Dell Studio laptop is refusing to start up. It gets to where the words Microsoft Corporation appear on the screen with a rectangular box above it with the little green bar moving across it which usually means it is doing something, but no matter how long I leave it nothing further happens. I have tried turning it on and off with no joy. Can anyone help please?

Can you get into Windows Safe Mode (by pressing F8 upon startup)? If so, you can then run System Restore.

Thanks Buenchico, I tried pressing F8 but nothing happens. Any other suggestions?

Try holding down F8, not just pressing it once.

had a similar problem, had to re-instal Windows :(

Use the Dell Recovery Discs. I don't think you will get very far without.

I held the Function key down until the test things came up. I let it go thriugh all the tests for about 15 minutes and believe it or not after that it started up fine .Thanks everyone for your help.
