If you live anywhere near a canal there are often shops (sometimes where there's a narrowboat hire company) which sell bits and bobs. You could always get something like one of those keyrings which is a float so if you drop your keys in the water they don't sink. Whatever you get it needs to be practical and not take up a lot of room!

Ooh - just thought, how about a plant as lots of narrowboats which are homes have plants on the roof.
Buy him a bucket, paint the word 'loo' on the side, and then just buy him something nice, like a book.

Certainly not a widescreen TV!

Seriously though, he'll still need kitchenware, so how about something for the kitchen? A set of mugs, maybe, with an appropriate design on them like canal barges? You can buy such things in visitor shops at canals or possibly on the internet under canal heritage sites.

If he plans to take his boat up our local canal,in Dudley,I suggest you get him a couple of 8 inch guns to mount on the front!
canalboats get cold and damp so buy him a hot water bottle
Some nice ideas here

Canal Folk Art... books and hand painted stuff.

A bucket and a plug?

just in case

a life jacket to sleep in, just in case he sleepwalks.
an anchor?  or just something one would buy any new tenant but smaller.
A fishing rod perhaps.
A weather vane perhaps?

There's a variety here:

Weather-Vanes

Rosie and Jim dolls.

A torch.

Handy when you're staggering back along the tow-path after a night in the Navigator's Arms.

A decent chandlers (boating supplies) will sell watertight, floating torches so they won't sink if dropped overboard !!
