Am I alone in thinking this couple were selfish when they embarked on their jaunt, without a care for those who might miss them? Whilst I am very glad that they have been returned to this country at long last, if I had a father still alive at the age of 99, I would not have considered swanning off on a self indulgent cruise around the world, but would have considered it only right to be there so he could enjoy his son's company, conversation, taking him for days out and to my home for Christmas etc. in other words giving back to my aged parent something in their old age Instead they just decided to sell up and set out on an endless holiday. They do not appear to have any children so maybe they have always lived just for themselves. Backlash welcome!

I know they did not anticipate being held hostage, but no doubt their voyage would have lasted as many if not more months. Yes, it is self indulgent to swan off into the wide blue yonder while you still have responsibilities at home.
we all have different relationships with our parents and families and it doesn't do to assume everyone feels the same about their relatives.
perhaps at the age of 60 it was a case of now or never. why do you consider it self indulgent?? none of us know anything about their background or what's gone on in their family so we really ought not to judge them. we all only get one shot at life and have to live it the way we see fit. if these two people have the sort of relationship with their elderly father that they would even consider leaving him for however long it should have taken for their trip, then they did the right thing. i have a great relationship with my sons but if there came a point when they were considering something like this if i live to be 90, then i would say good luck to them.
raised some hackles? i don't think so, just opened up a debate.

Let's face it, bedind my sanctamonious observations, the real issue is that I am jealous of those people who can just down tools and set off to enjoy themselves.
I agree with Ethandron. We never know what goes on behind closed doors and in other people's families. Given the opportunity I might well have done the same. No two families are alike. Who are we to make such statements? Besides, I expect nothing from my child in my old age. Perhaps Paul's father was the same.

Why can't you do the same Sqad - just out of interest?
Forget that last para. I got mixed up and thought the statement came from Sqad.
maybe their 60s was finally a time where they could do something that THEY want to do rather than putting everyone else first, we only have one life, why should them wanting to do something that they have probably dreamed of be considered as selfish?
