How about "underground" as an alternative to mike's answer though.

The number one can be solved with simple algebra. If the smallest number is x, then the next ones are x +2, x+4 and so on, until the ninth one which is x + 16. Adding all the terms gives the equation: 9x + 72 = 396, so 9x = 324 and x = 36. 36 + 16 =52.

Just checking answer to 23 - I make it 48 - what do you think Mikey?

If the highest is 48 then the lowest is 32, giving a total of 360. I'm sure I'm right, given my algebra above, unless I've totally lost the plot. Didn't use Excel.
