I TUNE ACCOUNT??

My son has asked for an ipod touch for christmas but he has been told he needs to have an i tunes account. When i've just had a quick look on the apple website for making an account it asks for all of my card details (expiry date, security etc etc) I thought he could just use the i phone vouchers? Im confused. We have just tried putting the details in for my son's bankcard (he,s 12) but it wouldn,t accept them. Now i'm more confused. Can anyone please enlighten me?

They don't make it obvious, but you can create an account without a card at all.

(of course without a card he won't be able to buy anything)
