What is the most self-sufficient way to create post holes?

I don't have a tractor and I don't want to buy a post-hole digger so wondered if it was possible to create post holes using, for example, horses (humanely of course). Alternatively, how can I make a post hole digger?

It reads as if you are going to dig post-holes on an industrial scale!! If that's the case you should be able to hire a motorised digger.I have seen the small mobile systems where the whole post is vibrated into position but I don't know of any hire source.If you are actually going to bore a handful or so you can hire a hand auger which are really only effective in clay or other dense soil(and hard work!!)

I am interested to know how a horse would dig a post hole for you. Just use a spade unless you have loads to do, then do as nono has said and hire something.

One of the stranger questions...................so give us a clue, what are you going to attach to these posts once sunk into the ground? I take it its something more substantial than a fence, if not then a spade dear Uberloitenment, a spade.

About £20 to £25. Look on Google for 'post hole digger. Best used where ground isn't too stony!!

I still dig them in by hand .. and spade.
2'6" deep about 18" for a 4-6" post.
Hard work .. but satisfying when they're in : )

I liked the way 'Mr Post-Hole-Digger' had already dug a hole and filled it in with fresh finely sieved soil before showing us how easy it is to use!! Pobably makes a lot more money selling 'post hole diggers' than we do 'digging holes' tho!
