What is the most self-sufficient way to create post holes?

I don't have a tractor and I don't want to buy a post-hole digger so wondered if it was possible to create post holes using, for example, horses (humanely of course). Alternatively, how can I make a post hole digger?

It reads as if you are going to dig post-holes on an industrial scale!! If that's the case you should be able to hire a motorised digger.I have seen the small mobile systems where the whole post is vibrated into position but I don't know of any hire source.If you are actually going to bore a handful or so you can hire a hand auger which are really only effective in...
