North Korea has fired live ammo at a populated island that is just south-west of Seoul; no-one killed but there are some injuries as well as damage to buildings.

This isn't the first military skirmish that the North has initiated but will one of these incidents be the trigger for full military engagement between North and South Korea in the near future?

Unlikely, It's just kim Jong Nipper showing off. neither party would risk a serious escalation.

The toll now stands at 2 dead, 16 injured.

When you take into account the sinking of that warship earlier in the year, which was probably down to the North, together with today's reports that they are further along the road to having a nuclear weapon than had previously been believed then maybe it would be better to take decisive action now rather than to keep letting these incidents happen.

However one would guess that China, in particular, won't want any pro-active measures to be taken.
Leave it to the Yanks this time, we have enough on our plate.
maybe its cause North Korea want a bit of attention again? we are discussing this at the hostel im in atm, plus, you heard about the water festival in Phnom Penh?

If North Korea even fails to listen to China then the world is doomed!
It's not so long since they torpedoed a South Korean navy ship and killed about 40 people.
This is a rogue state. Where are Bush + Blair when they're needed?
North Korea is a socialist working class paradise...we should all be clamouring to go there and share in their happiness...
There's two sides to every story.

I wonder what actually happened.
this will take China to cool them down (dont't know if Russia to the North has any influence on them). Personally I dont see how the Jong-il(l) transfer of power leads to shelling of an island unless its the faceless militiary junta exerting its power.
