If someone I loved was in danger I would rush to help without thinking, be that loved one a person or a beloved animal. It would just be automatic I think.
My ex jumped into a river to save our dog....it was February, and he stripped down to his pants.I wasn't there-but our daughter-who was about 8,was.
I seem to remember him worrying about Weil's disease-and having tests for it.
it depends if you love your pet - if you think if them as just a dog or whatever, then no, but some people truly love their pets...
can't say i'd do it for a goldfish or a guinea pig, but i do think i would for my present or past dogs. i really did love them...!
If my dog did happen to fall into an icy river, I`d get him to promise never to bark again whenever the doorbell rings and to stop scrounging when people are eating, only then will I save him ;o)

Several years ago I lived in Grimsby and I often took my dog Barney for long walks along the remote coast south of Cleethorpes. The sands go out for a very long way and the tide comes in very quickly.

One day, I crossed with Barney to a sand bar about a mile long and walked the length of it. When I returned to where I had crossed - there was a channel about 100 yards across with the tide flowing in! I wasd miles from anywhere and there was no one else around. I knew I couldn't wait and I immediately started swimming across knowing the tide was flowing in but thinking the dog would have to look out for himself. When I climbed out the other side Barney was climbing out beside me!

I loved my dog as much as the next dog owner. However, at that moment in time I knew I was going to save my own neck and I wasn't going to take any chances for the dog. That might be why I'm still here!
