Crooked teeth!

If i had the money i would love to get my crooked teeth straightened. (middle two on the lower set). I asked my dentist and he baffled me as to what options are available but did say it would cost thousands. Daren't ask him again as he will think i'm stupid. They have gone exactly the same as my dads so maybe its genetic. Im 42.....is it too late to have a brace fitted? The other way ive seen on tv iiiis where they file the tooth down to a stump then put a tooth over the top???????
