How many kingfishers are there in the British Isles? I have seen one and the old cliche about them being one of the most breathtaking sites known to birddom is true!

They certainly are stunning birds and you're very lucky if you managed to have a good look at one - usually its a glorious flash of blue and turquoise - and gone!! The RSPB have a good website that describes their life and the particular habitats they require.
The BBC are repeating the incredible "My Halcyon River" on Sunday 16th March at 18.25 as part of the 'Natural World' series. Just a thought in case you missed it last time, as there is an amazing Kingfisher sequence in it.

Thank you both for you answers. I loved the RSPB site and shall certain visit it again and again! There are 3,600 - 6,000 breeding pairs in the UK. And did you know that the lifespan of a Kingfisher is an expected 15 yrs? Sadly, I missed the nature prog - I was round at a mates, and thanks to a male friend peeing in my VCR when drunk, I couldn't video it! But maybe it'll be on again eh?
Don't worry about missing the prog on Sunday - you didn't - the Beeb in their wisdom replaced the 'Halcyon River' with Tony Blair, George Bush et al having a chat, so now you have another chance to see it - when it happens!!
