Bit late to this one - been playing golf.
I agree with Dr B - a very nice puzzle indeed - elegant and even the x checking letters marry the theme.

congrats to DJ, Ros & Andrew ... looks like I got runner up on speccie 1989 so we're doing well
Must thank Mintyman for posting the link(s). I'm ashamed to say that I won first prize on the Macbeth themed puzzle, on a downloaded printout from this thread, which was my first ever Spectator entry.
What's to be ashamed of? Not everyone has beginner's luck, but everyone who wins has luck of some kind. Congratulations rather than an apology are in order!
Just got around to it. Thought it was the best Spectator puzzle for some time. I thought the cluing had a touch of the Listener too.
I have all the rest of the solutions, but cannot see how 30 down works. Can some kind soul offer some light please?
Rooney is the striker.
Thanks K. Not into football, I must admit. And a 'submarine sandwich' is news to me too!
A bit tougher than usual. When did we last have a Classical themed Spectator - took me back to Latin lessons.
What a wonderful in memoriam
