Ford Escort Bonnet Problem

I've tried to open the bonnet on my 1998 Ford Escort but when I pull the release lever under the steering wheel nothing happens, I suspect the release cable must have snapped. I've spoken to my local garage and they're talking about removing the bumper and radiator to fix it, which all seems a bit extreme, I was wondering if it's worth calling out the RAC, is this something perhaps they'd be able to fix?

Thanks for the advice Alsorts, I'm an RAC member so I've got nothing to lose, but something tells me they won't be able to fix it and this could turn out to be an expensive repair :-(

Yeah that's what I was thinking, I've been going there for a while, but maybe loyalty counts for nothing these days...
Are you sure the cable has not come out of the lever. You need to check .. and pull with some pliers if it has. Gat someone to press down a bit on front of bonnet first to take pressure off.
I think one could get access by removing the bumper (which is easy)
Then wire and long screwdriver.
