My husband travels a lot and I thought I might get him a kindle for Christmas. I'm not very technical so can anyone tell me about them (really an idiots guide to kindle) Also which model is best and what else would I have to get besides the actual reader. Also how do you get the books, I presume online but how do they get on to the kindle. Thanks in advance to anyone taking pity on a half wit.

you don't need anything else except the Kindle.
You download book from amazon (they do some free ones and some which you have to pay for) as kindle is amazon's own make ereader (other e-readers are available!)

if you have wireless router at home, when you purchase the books, it just downloads them automatically onto the kindle, and they are there when you turn it on. you can either use your computer to browse for books, or direct from the kindle as well (and you can download newspapers) if he is in a "wireless hotspot" anywhere in the country he can do that on the £109 model. If he is liklely to want to download new books in places where there is not free wireless available, then get the £149 model because it has 3g capability meaning you can download anywhere (on the beach etc like the ad) I got the 3g one because i wanted to download books while i was in hospital.
You need an amazon account set up to buy books for it

I plan to get one myself. I'm going the extra £40 for the 3G model because then I can download a book whenever I feel like it without having to find a computer first - such as when I'm away in the caravan. With the Sony ones, apparently, you don't get the 3G function - you have to use a computer to download.
There's also the fact that even if you haven't got any money you can still get a fairly wide range of free downloads from Amazon - mainly classic books. No to everyone's taste, I know, but then if you're desperate for a read ...
The downside is that libraries and their suppliers seem to be going for the Sony format, but with the cost of even the paid-for Kindle books being so low, it's probably not worth worrying about.
