He maybe needs his dosage adjusted. It does sound like thyroid problems.
Donna, get your mum to ask the vet for more blood tests (or go to another vet). My cat Rover was very hungry but kept being sick and was losing weight in front of my eyes - a simple blood test revealed he has severe kidney problems. He takes a tablet for this every morning and is quite back to normal (except for his current tooth problem). Also worth checking for worms, if he has a worm the worm might be getting all the nourishment.
Incidentially Rover won't eat the special kidney food (and I don't blame him), I just buy him good quality senior cat food.
Rover's latest blood test is checking for thyroid but he's certainly not losing weight now.
I'd get a second opinion if I were you, just in case vet No. 1 has missed something.
Personally, id be seeking a second opinion!

£40 per week for 6 months and no improvement? I'd go mental!
Yes karen is right it sounds like thyroid & it can take time to get the dosage correct.
Seriously? As in 6 months?
He may have also gone a little senile and it is possible that he has become fixated on food. I have no idea of how to overcome that problem though.

Thanks for your answers I have called my mum and she is now going to get a second opinion at another vets.
Let us know how she gets on, as a cat person I am always interested and I'm sure others will be too!
Or diabetes. Cats get the same things go wrong with them as human beings.
One of my cats had Hyperthyroidsm and had blood tests every 3 months to make sure he was getting the right dosage, seems as though your moms cats hyperthyroidsm is not under control, Should take him back to the vets.
One of my dogs has thyroid problems, one blood test, second blood test after three months then tablets adjusted to one a day, cost fourteen pounds for 40.
