Dog and eggs
10 Answers
My 8 month old JRT has "helped" me on 3-4 occasions now when I've been seeing to the hens. While I've been topping their feed up he's sneaked into the hen house, gently picked up an egg out of the nesting box, carried it up the garden and carefully laid it on the lawn, at which point I've asked him to step back and retrieved the egg.
All this from a pup who can destroy "indestructable" toys within minutes!
Why does he do this, does he instinctively know that it would break if he was rough with it?
In which case, as he loves raw eggs, it would be in his interest to crack it before I took it away. Any thoughts?

Hi slinky. Incredible though this may sound, it is not unique. My dear old Newfi, whilst an extremely gentle giant of a dog, had the ability to crack huge baked knuckle bones at the first crunch. This always reminded me of the sheer strength of this dog. Having been shopping one day, I unloaded all the grocery bags from the car in to the hall. As I unpacked the bags one by one I suddenly noticed that Bosun was walking around the lounge, wagging his tail and that there was something in his mouth. Inspection revelaed he had opened a carton of eggs from one of the bags and removed one - it was the same egg he was carrying between his huge jaws. I tentatviely put my hand out and asked him to give the egg to me. He did so, eventually, and I was amazed to see that there was no mark on the egg at all. This is the same dog who happily and literally chewed a leg off one of my dining chairs among other acts of gross puppy vandalism. Bosun enjoyed all food - raw or cooked, but I have no idea why he did this particular act. Dogs are amazing animals at times.
