How could this have been missed?
14 Answers
One of the children I look after (aged almost 2) has been quite poorly all week waking with a slight temp, coughing and snotty. She gradually got worse on Wed and mum took her to GP where she said there was nothing wrong with her that she could see whatever was up must be viral. Then yesterday, she had a high temp of 39 and looked absolutely dreadful, was coughing continuously nearly making herself sick. Mum came to get her and by evening she was even worse and her temp didn't come down at all. So they had to take her to emergency docs where she was told it was tonsilitus. How come the first doc couldn't spot this or does it just come on quickly? I am just trying to understand and am upset that shes had to suffer and get in that state before eventually been able to get treated. Not to mention the fact that shes probably infected all my family now as well ARRGH!

your family will have been subjected to the cold or whatever she had earlier in week, not the tonsilitus. As a childcarer you should know that colds will be shared and remind parents that anything more than that (certainly with a temp) that you dont want the children being brought in so as to avoid infecting all.

Wed....the Dr didn´t say that there was nothing wrong with her....the Dr said it was a viral infection.
So far so good.
Yesterday...coughing, high temperature.......A&E doctor diagnosed tonsillitis......with due respect I cannot associate the symptom of coughing with tonsillitis.
Medicine is all about opinions following a history and examination.
My money goes on it being viral as suggested by the first doctor.

I hope it doesn't end up being contagious! I am fully aware that it is the downside of being a childminder that my kids catch illnesses from the minded children and vice versa but unfortunately I cannot exclude children for being a little unwell. If I did I would never be open lol! Its a hard decision to make really as you know that the parents have to take an unpaid day off work and unless the child is seriously ill or had a definite illness diagnosed I have to provide a service, it would be unprofessional to do so. I just hope it makes my kids build up their immune system and never catch anything!
Yeah it just seems that the first doc may have missed something but if thats not the case then fair enough. Its not nice to think that if she had have found the tonsilitus straight away (if that was possible) then the poor mite would have been treated straight away and not suffered as much. God its hard having all these kids to worry about you know! I think of her as my own really, she is with me all day every day. Its like having 4 kids instead of 2.
