im reposting but will try and explain myself more clearly!
scenario. you have a list of friends on facebook and everyone i assume can see the friends you have. if i add my husband to facebook, can he stop other people from seeing him on my list? im asking this as i dont want friends of friends to see him on there as someone we know is an old flame and we have had our ups and downs about trust in the past.

I that's the case I'd say the pair of you still have issues with trust! Either tell your husband that the ex is on there, or cut out the hassle and remove the ex.
But in answer to your question, no, I don't think he can be on your list without others seeing him there.

Good grief, what a load of cobblers!
If you want to keep a particular issue private from anybody the last place you should publish it (with or without the "precautions" mentioned here which, it seems, might or might not work) is somewhere like Facebook. Just keep it to yourself and if you want to tell anybody about it whom you think you can trust just tell them and them alone by a private, secure method.

Yes, of course, totally unreasonable.
Conversely it’s perfectly reasonable to consider publishing to wide audience information that you want some people to be privy to and not others. Especially when the vehicle for publication is something like Facebook, which has demonstrated on numerous occasions that information which contributors have provided in the expectation that it will remain confidential to a chosen few ends up in the hands of all and sundry.
I know what. I’ll write a book containing some private information, get it published (with the likelihood that some copies will end up in public libraries) and then I’ll ask advice about how to keep my secrets private.
I think that’s also perfectly reasonable.
