Power consumption

Pray, which of the following items consume most electricity? TV, Radio, Laptop and charging a mobile phone. In order to save cost I find it difficult putting any of these appliances on because my landlord says he will charge me for any extra electricity costs. So, how much power does each of the above consume pls.

Your items should have a little plate attached to them somewhere that will tell you their electrical requirements, including wattage. You can calculate comsumption from the following formula. Wattage x Hours Used Per year/1000


Example:- 100watt appliance, in use 4 hours per day, 365 days a year, with a unit cost of 6p per kwh

100 Watts x 4 x 365 / 1000
= 146 kWh x �0.06p / kWh
= �8.76 / year

You'll have to adapt the figures to suit your items and how long they are in use. Also the 6p unit figure for electricity will probably be different, although you can still use it for all the items to give you an idea of which will cost most to run.

What does your landlord mean by 'extra electricity used' ? Sounds like a right tight git.

I would try and get something down in writing as to what constitutes 'reasonable consumption' and what he considers 'excessive consumption'. He shouldn't rip you off for any extra either - ie you should pay the unit charge as per the bill, and not his margin on top !!

It all sounds very dodgy to me.

y2kroja, i agree with brachiopod, this is all very fishy!  Does your monthly/weekly rent include all your bills?  How would your landlord know if you charge your mobile? Does he have 24 hour access without your permission?  If you live in the kind of enviornment where your privacy is so outrageously exploited then move now!  Anywhere is better than this!

I agree with above.  What's to stop your landlord running up a huge leccy bill, blaming you and charging you for it?  Have you got a gas or electric fire, 'cause if it's electric you're ******** this winter!
