yes Herbert sutcliffe is correct.
But the master by a huge huge huge marging in a similar era is Don Bradman(aus)

I think the OP means which English batsman has the highest test average for an Englishman. I sense no deception beyond odd phrasing.

The only trick i could see would be if it it was tail-end batsman who had lots of Not Out innings or, more likely, someone who only played a handful of tests and scored quite a lot of runs over several innings but was out only once.
These stats only count when 20 tests have been completed.
There may be statistical anomolies but they generally only serve novelty value. I've never lost in a fight with Cassius Clay you know!
Yes I think it will be Herbert Sutcliffe
sorry that's test innings, not test matches

Thank you!
I don't follow cricket (as you can tell!) - but are there no 'present day' England cricketers with higher test averages?
Perplexed!
Alastair Cook's batting average in the CURRENT Test series is well over 100 (123.75) but his average across ALL Test matches is far lower (45.83).

Herbert Sutcliff, with a Test average of 60.73, is still at the top of the table among England players:

Chris
PS: As that table shows, Jonathan Trott leads the Test batting averages among current players. (57.28)
Harry Wood - average 68, but only played four matches.
