I already have the the box unit here but have never done anything like this before. After I turn of the mains and remove all the fuses will the plug be safe? I also have a battery operated B&Q 3 in 1 detector that detects wallstuds and live wires which should also help?

How easy or hard is it to do and what's the dangers?

Depends on the age of the wiring as to the colours as it has changed over the years, make sure you mark the wires up yourself with sticky tags and draw a quick sketch if you have never done anything like this before
It could even have 3 of each colour if there's a spur coming off it. I take a photo (digital) when I remove the cover then al the info is there.
modern wiring uses brown for live (previously red), blue for neutral (previously black), and green and yellow stripes for earth
