Does anyone remember rectangular ice-cream cones?
32 Answers
I was scooping some Wall's vanilla ice-cream from a long block for my son today and I was telling how when I was his age, they used to sell individually wrapped vanilla ice-cream rectangles (shaped a bit like choc ice) which fitted perfectly in a rectangular cone. I haven't seen these around for many years and wish they would bring it back. Wall's sell a long block of vanilla and it would be easier to cut it neatly to fit in a rectangular cone. I know they've brought back things from my youth for nostalgic reasons; I wonder if rectangular cones and individually wrapped ice-cream will ever make a return?

ScrummyYummy:
You wonder if individually-wrapped ice cream will ever make a return. Wouldn't it be a good idea if someone put the ice cream into the cone and then wrapped the whole thing? (Thus saving the tricky manoeuvre of getting the ice cream into the cone without dropping it on the floor). Perhaps it could be called something like, er, a 'Cornetto'?

Wow! Seems this has brought back memories for lots of you, so I'm not the only 70s child on here!! Buenchico, I can see where you're coming from with the ready stuffed cone but wouldn't that just make the wafer soft and limp? I know Cornettos aren't soft but their cone is a harder, more biscuity wafer than the square wafer 'cones' from my youth. If I'm honest, I think it's the lazy-always-in-a-rush side of me that has triggered memories of these rectangle, ready wrapped ice-creams. When I got the block of ice-cream out for my son, I had to use a spoon to scoop it up (no good cutting it with a knife as the cone is round (!), then I had to push it down the round cone, more scoops (as one scoop is never big enough), more shovelling it onto the cone, then I had to fold the now soggy cardboard back over the rest of the ice-cream before putting it away and in the mean time, some of the ice-cream had melted around the box or worktop so I had to clear it up (told you I was lazy!). I thought, how easy it would be just to peel a ready block then stick it into the rectangular 'cone'! All I would have to do is throw away the wrapper, or better still, get the child to lick the wrapper and then he can throw it away! I might have to write to Wall's to get them to bring back rectangular cones and matching ice-creams!
I was just talking to my husband about these last week. There was only one shop you could get them in in our area and my granny would always buy me them. We also had a Walls Ice Cream van and that was all that it sold - all the other vans sold ice lollies, sweets. crisps, cigarettes etc, but you could only get rectangular ice cream from the Wall's van.
