Live in the north of England own a small property. Need to move south to look after mother who lives in a housing assoc property. cannot sell house at moment but can rent out. We would have right to take over tenancy but is this allowed if we still own

I could be entirely wrong but I though a council/housing association tenancy is based on the needs of the tenant, there is no automatic right of other family members to succeed to the tenancy.

You have not been living in your mother's house so I don't think it is correct to say you would have a right to take over the tenancy.

The simplest way to confirm the situation is to ask the landlord (Council or Housing Association).

I can only (sadly) agree with the other posters.
You cannot take over the tenancy of a housing assoc/council property,as you have not been living there,
As you also have a property you own this would rule out taking on the tenancy as well.

And just to add, if you didn't know, there are massive price differences so even if you sold your house you may not be in a position to buy. I'm (sorta reluctantly) having to move from south to the Midlands, and although I didn't fully own it (and couldn't pay the rest which is why I sold up) because I was going the south to north, I was way luckier than if I'd moved the other way.
