I have always worked in car sales and after sales and want out. I would like a job which is not comission based and does not involve selling. Has anyone got any ideas what I could do with the experience I have? I cannot afford to go back into education, as much as I'd like to!

Most rail companies are always looking for staff. Everything from Station Supervisors through to Conductors. Salaries vary but are usually around 15k for 'lower grade' platform staff or 20K for supervisors and conductors. If you want to make more money (and could put up with the utter tedium) you could train as a train driver. (Salaries start at around 30k).

Some government agencies (e.g. Job Centres) give 'customer handling experience' priority over qualifications.

Most call-centre work seems to get the 'thumbs down' from its employees but I've known people who find jobs, in those centres which only handle incoming calls, to be reasonably satisfying.

If you've been working in a customer-facing environment what about 'Reception' work? (In an office or hotel, perhaps?)

I assume you know a lot about cars so something in an advisory capacity - writing descriptions for magazines, websites and trade literature. same subject but no selling - exept with prose!

or even teach classes on what to look for when buying a car so as not to be ripped off

Thanks Chris, I actually live right by train station & their offices, so that's not a bad idea. A guy I knew left selling BMW's to work on the trains so I guess there;s something in it!
