Cat Feeding

Just noticed the feeding advice on the side of the cat food box and it says they should have 3 or 4 packets a day. I feed my cat wet food in the morning and evening and he has a bowl of dry food down through the day and he is a little porky. If I fed him 4 sachets a day I would need to winch him out of his chair every day. How much do you feed your cat?

My neighbour's cat (who thinks he lives with me) usually eats about one 400g of cat food per day in my house, plus what he eats in his 'proper' home, plus what he almost certainly gets in other houses in the street, plus the stuff he begs from my plate, plus the cat treats I give him, plus various bits of the birds which he insists upon dismembering underneath my desk.

I used to have a VERY large cat (who actively sought out and chased big dogs!), who got through a minimum of 600g of cat food per day.

My cat would eat all day if I let him but it isn't healthy! I give him one sachet in the morning and one in the evening with only a few dry biscuits in between if he's driving me particularly mad. They need a drink with dry food though.

ha ha Chris, sounds like the cat you don't even own has you wrapped around his little claw.

Pips, he does have a bowl of water down all the time. I just asked because the recommended amount seemed like an awful lot.

I think it's to make you buy more, I noticed the advert for IAMS dry food says "my owner would have to feed me up to 4 of these" (sachets) - it's way too much!

My 2 cats have about 4 between them per day - any more and they'd be fat wee bu99ers :)

It all depends on the cats age, how active the cat is and if it goes outside. Cats need to eat dry food to (A) make them drink lots of water to help their kidneys and (B) it helps to clean their teeth as kidney and teeth are the two main problems they suffer from as they get older. One pouch a day is enough with as much dry food as they want if they are active, if they are not you can buy low calarie food, plenty of fresh water is a must.

i give murph 40 grams of dry in the morning and and 80grm tin of wet food in the evening + plus whatever she scrounges of my plate :-)

that was on vets advice (not the scrounging bit though) and she's a big cat

It depends on the age of the cat and how active the cat is, and if it's a house cat or not. Cat's need dry food to (A) make them drink water to help their kidneys (B) to help clean their teeth as kidney and teeth are the main health problems they get as they get older. One pouch and plenty of dry food and fresh water is enough a day. If you'r cat is over weight you can buy low calerie food as fat cats also get health problems. hope this is helpful to you x

We feed our's exactly the same as yours, Don't think we could afford to feed her that many packets a day! Mind you she does sleep most of the day now we have our heating on all of the time, she had definitely put on some holiday weight!!!!

tinkerbella has a small tin of posh cat pate or about half a pouch twice a day but has dried food in a couple of places she has a little fresh chicken or fish when we do and sometimes tinned pilchards, salmon, or tuna if I give her more wet food it just goes to waste
