Sacking the manager

When a football team performs badly over a number of games, why is the first instinct always to sack the manager?

Why not sack some of the players? If the current manager is no good, who's to say another one will fair any better?

milly....very,very good question to which I have some sympathy, but do not know the answer.

The players are carrying out the manager's systems and strategy. Of course they have their own input and abilities, good days, bad days, and they get dropped all the time. There is also a possibility that the manager and players, or more likely a couple of key players, are at loggerheads or just don't get on and are thus not giving their all, sort of "work to rule", ie go through the motions, get paid, go home etc. A chairman will take into account all of the above and conclude that the manager has to go. There are many examples of teams being turned around even in half a season by the introduction of a new manager that the players respect, understand and will put themselves out for. The premiership clubs in trouble at the moment will be hoping that the new manager if then get one will stave off relagation.

any other job, if you don't perform to a set standard you would get sacked so why not in football.
The people in charge want quick success for the money it will bring them personally. Their bank account first, the football club 2nd. On a similar note, Chelsea were double winners last season. Their manager will probably be sacked before the season is over!
steg.......really....if one under performs in a Nationalised Industry........would you get sacked ?...Not likely.

But milly wants to know if the team under performs, then why sack the manager and not get rid of some of the under performing players, but that I think has been answered by the above posters.
working in a Nationalised Industry is not really a job is it? it is more like overpaid dole money
??? The manager has bought the players, at vast expense to the club. That is why he is there. His job is to make the club successful nothing else, if he fails then he hasn't done his job.

The players are his choice, they are assests of the club, you don't sack an asset worth millions (or hundreds of thousands) of pounds.

If your at work and a manager make a decision that cost the company a lot of money, would you think it reasonable to sack you while the manager remains?
