Jo Yeates Murder: 500 Sex Offenders Live Nearby.
31 Answers
The attached Daily Mail link claims that some 500 registered sex offenders are shown as living within a few miles of the home of murder victim Jo Yeates in Bristol.
Is this really helpful in any way regarding the search for Jo's killer? No suggestion that Jo was sexually assaulted has been intimated by the Police (so far?).
It won't help identify these people, something presently denied under existing legislation.
So, what's the point in this revelation? Won't it just create a greater climate of fear for other women living in the Bristol area?
Is this irresponsible, scaremongering journalism, or public spirited reporting?

The 'lack of progress' perceived by the DM and other papers who are panting to write up the *gotcha* headlines means that this sort of reporting is now becoming all too frequent.
Whilst these facts are not untruths, they are neither pertinent nor helpful.; I don't think any paedophiles would have found Miss Yeates particularly alluring.

Thanks to those of you who have commented on the topic of my thread instead of individual pixels.
The point of the post is obvious, but if you were a woman living in Bristol, already very worried at this awful murder, this article will surely only ratchet up their fears, plus it will put significantly more pressure on an already overstretched Police Force to not only try to make an early breakthrough, but to also somehow come up with loads of extra manpower to patrol the area for reassurance purposes.
I wouldn't be surprised if the journalistic watchdog (is there such a body, and does it have any teeth?) wasn't inundated with complaints about the article which can only have served to make a heck of a lot of nervous women even more so.
