Is it the sort that is a U shaped channel and clips on to little plastic lugs? If so, the gap between the 2 (short) legs of the U might be slightly too far apart to grip the lug. Try squeezing it together a bit at top and bottom of the strip with a pair of pliers.
There are so many different styles of trim and a multitude of clips and methods of securing the trim Rhoda. It depends entirely on your particular car.

In general, it should just be a matter of looking carefully at your trim then deciding how it was secured to the car at the factory. You can then re-adjust your trim to fit the existing clips, or it might be that you have to replace the clips. You can buy new ones at your local dealer or visit a nearby breakers yard.
