I listened to a nature programme on the radio some time ago where it was said that a particular species of bird - I cannot remember which, hence the question- has no song of its own but can only 'steal/imitate' songs from other birds, can anybody tell me what bird this might be?

Lawrence's Thrush of South America imitates nearly 200 other bird songs as well as frog's and insects.  It may have it's own natural song, but if so, is used so little as to be nearly unrecognizable...
Oh great, a bird that just does cover versions. Is Simon Cowell it's manager or something?

I don't think it is Lawrence's Thrush, I seem to recall it being a bird, quite common, which I had heard of - chaffinch springs to mind - could it be this??

Starlings are really good at imitation other birds and sounds. I don't know if it doesn't have a song of its own though.
imitating not imitation...
How come I have never yet heard a bird sing a song that I recognise?
