AAMOI, do you know what happened to The Cradlewell in Jesmond? Last time I was in the Toon I went there in the hope of catching up with some of the regulars (I was a barman there in the 80s) only to find it closed down...

There was a lot of redevelopment, mainly connected with making the Coast Road into Newcastle dual carriageway. One of my favourites was the Grape Vaults, the men-only pub just off Grey Street. It had to close in 1976 after the introduction of the Sex Discrimination Act because it was too small to accommodate ladies' toilets. The Farmer's Arms was right in the Haymarket bus station, so it was usually the first and last port of call during a night on the Town.

The Cradlewell's still there - it's just boarded up...

With the building of the dual carriageway it's no longer on the main road, so that may have something to do with it. There was also the Punchbowl nearby. Don't know if that's still going, but I haven't been up that way for ages.

The Punchbowl is still going strong, from what I could tell. I didn't go in, though, as they were always "the rivals"... :-)
