Calling all Border Terrier Owners!

We have a Border Terrier, absolutely fantastic in every way, however, when hes on his lead and we come across other dogs, he turns really nasty and barks incessantly, and can be very frightening to other dog owners. Off his lead he is fine.

Anyone any ideas how we can stop this behaviour.

Try using a pet corrector spray. Dont spray near the face though.

No ideas how to stop it, sorry, but if anyone else comes up with anything , I shall pass it on to the owner of a Border Terrier I meet regularly when walking my very placid Border Collie because she has the same problem as you! Her dog gets so worked up that she can hardly control him.

Oh No hope its not us you see!! I find it v strange and get quite embarrassed by him, he is so good and has been well trained in everything else but just cant seem to stop this behaviour...I dont like the idea of the spray? Has anyone had any success with this?

I take the pet corrector spray out with me and use it if a dog barks that I know will start mine off. It doesnt harm the dogs, and I dont spray it anywhere near them, it is just the hissing sound that they dont like. It works on all the other dogs in the neighbourhood too.

Well, the advice from my dog trainer was that as soon as he starts to react, before he gets into full blown aggression, then you shoud turn him around and walk back the way you came,and so removing the chance to react, then walk foward again, more aggression, then back again!.......takes time and patience!........ worked for my dog though he was not a Border Terrier, but a terrier nontheless, it took a few days, but he got the message, and little by little we got past his aggression to other dogs................good luck.................

The reason he is ok off the lead is because he knows when he is on the lead you can pull him out of trouble! Take him to training classes where he can learn to interact with other dogs and in the meantime make him sit or lie down when other dogs are going past.
