Get loose covers. Not worth the time and energy, it won't look as good as new covers or a new sofa. And if it gets a spill on it, it might damage your clothes. Although having said that, loose covers are just as expensive as a new DFS sofa ! Why not buy a sofa from Gumtree if you can't afford a new one ? Or ebay ??
I was thinking about doing the same to my sons sofabed. I know you can get fabric paints that they use in art classes. I think you paint them on with a brush. It may be time consuming though. Dylon do a fabric paint which stays soft after it dries so that sounds suitable for something like a sofa. Good luck to us both!!
