Trying to check, I know it well - but they were certainly still collecting in 1950! http://hansard.millba...andwich-receipts-1950
There is a plaque on the bridge giving old toll fees and commemorates the abolishment of tolls in 1977 but I do not know if there is a more specific date.
This is a nice pic of it - again, no detailed date http://www.flickr.com...79646@N04/4931238583/

Sorry going mad, typing search in answer box! LOL
They are reintroducing the toll as a means to countering the government cuts in Kent.

In Norfolk, over the River Yare at Lakenham, they are introducing tolls too. But being of the twelve finger, three nipples brigade, the tollkeeper will give 20p to each vehicle that crosses the bridge.
This is from the Official Sandwich Town website:~

Turn left, under the BARBICAN, built by King Henry VIII and see the list of charges made to cross the TOLL BRIDGE until 1977, when the last Toll was collected, thus ending a tradition dating back to King Canute who first granted a Charter to the Monks of Christchurch in Canterbury to operate a ferry across the river

If you want to see it in situ, look here:~

The Sandwich bridge is still free, and there is no intention of re~introducing a toll.

Thank you Boxtops and Invictas, Looking forward to seeing it later this year, when on holiday in Kent.
Ninnynanny, it's a lovely old town, 15 minutes away from me here in Dover - you'll like it. Where will you be staying? There is so much to see and do around here!
