Asked to fill in an opinion survey recently on alcohol problems and minimum pricing, I said that I thought the availability of alcohol was a major factor in the social problems it caused, and not the price.
I believe that the poorer people who like a drink should not be discriminated against, but rather a return to more restrictive opening hours, reduced hours for clubs in particular, and designated alcohol outlets rather than the corner shop and supermarkets.

people dont realise the affects of continual heavy drinking, a lot of my familys friends all used to drink heavily in the 70s and 80s, not spirits though, this was just beer and cider, most of them should be enjoying retirment now but they all succumbed to alcohol related deaths in the last 10 years, I wonder if any of the drinkers now ever think of what kind of future they may be drinking their way to?
I'm not all that bothered about drink or smoking but one thing is certain just tinkering with the prices is not going to make any difference. This is typical of governments they never clamp down hard on anything . Whether it's crime , drugs , dangeroue driving , or social behaviour they just impose moderate punishments. Nothing works unless it hurts in one go . Applying low fines or prices or Asbos over a period of time doesn't work . People just adapt and get use to them . If they want to stop us drinking , they should at least double or treble the price. I don't want them to do so but if they do they should hit hard . This applies to punishment of all crimes and anti social behaviour. At the moment their softly softly approach to all misdemeanors as dictated by the do-gooders doesn't work.
