I think he wants to get back in touch, and he's using the the party excuse to give himself an opening. He's probably waiting to see how you respond. 'He can't come' because he's shooting in the dark, and doesn't know if there's a party or not.

Hi ange1, firstly i think that if your friend is just making it up then he's obviously lost the plot! Why would anyone in their right mind want to do something like that?! (no offence) Wouldn't it be easier to call and say 'hey long time no hear' etc.

Secondly i would ask anyone i.e friends, patner who you may suspect would be planning the party to tell you the truth. Then get your best gear on and enjoy.

Hope you have fun whatever the outcome may be.

Keep up the pretence that you don't know or you will end up getting involved in the arrangements.

Even though the cat is now out of the bag you can still look surprised when the time comes - just avoid the temptation to go over the top or it will look false.

I reckon there are very few surprise parties where the 'victim' isn't half expecting it.

I agree with shehin - I had a "surprise" party for my 40th earlier this year, and I knew all about it! At least I had got my make-up and decent clothes on, and I made it easy for my husband to arrange the "surprise" by being (unusually) co-operative with his furtive plans. You can enjoy watching your friends and family plotting, and then as has been said above, look surprised and happy when it happens, and don't let on you knew!!!
Plus, as youre not aware of their being a party, you can conveniently not take much money out with you, therefore ensuring that you get bought drinks all night! Have one for me!
It's not your fault that you know so you haven't let anyone down. I'd say that this sounds like a brilliant opportunity to wind up whoever has organised party. If it was me I'd make sure that I changed plans at the last minute or whatever it took to make them think that their meticulous planning was going to fail. Surprise party throwers have to make the target think that everyone has forgotten their birthday to heighten the effect of the surprise. Tell them at the last minute that you've booked a plane ticket to Azerbaijan because no one was around for your birthday.
