Recordable DVD Player

If I buy a recordable DVD player, will I be able to play anything I have recorded from it on any other DVD player or just that one.

There are in fact three different type of recordable DVD

One called DVD- (minus), one called DVD+ (plus) and another called DVD ROM (not seen much). 

MOST modern DVD players can RECORD DVD minus and plus, and most modern DVD players can PLAY DVD minus and plus.

So if you record a DVD minus on your DVD recorder, then you should be able to play it on any player that can play DVD minus. Same goes for plus  

Note that there is something fairly new called Dual Layer. This allows you to record more information on a DVD, but it does not play back on all DVD players.

Thanks very much vehelpfulguy, you are just that.  Your explaination made sense so I can go and buy one with confidence....she says

though you may be better waiting for HD-DVD or blu-ray, which are going to try to take over standard DVD in the next few years.

also note: hard drive recorders. These are very useful things, especially when they have a media recorder built-in too.
