is is possible to fit a pendant light over an island in the kitchen if there are spotlights already fitted into the ceiling, maybe its possible to change one for the pendant im guessing?

You might be lucky .............. as Doc says, they might be 12 volt. The transformer is often found up there too. If you take the fitting off and pull the cabling towards you....... you might come across the transformer (which will be mains fed ... 240v)
Then you can connect the pendant to the feed and do away with the transformer.
........... Doc mentioned an earth .............. good point!
low voltage lighting with a transformer doesn't require an earth. If you fit a metal 240v light fitting, you must earth it. Make sure there's an earth up there in the ceiling too!!!
Another option would be to fit a 12v (or 25V) pendent light and extend the existing cable.

of course this all depends on if the existing light is low voltage or not, can you remove one of the current bulbs and read what it says on the side if it?
