The first independent local radio station in the British Isles began broadcasting in 1973. This was the London Broadcasting Company, or LBC as it is better known, and was largely speech orientated. In the same year Capital Radio in London and Radio Clyde in Glasgow went on air thus heralding the beginning of independent commercial radio in this country, as alternative to the BBC radio station network.
