NO Parking Signs

I park my car in a road outside of the city centre when i go to work. There is small car repair garage there with two gates that has painted 'no parking' on walls either side. This has gradually extended further down the road and several cones have been placed further and further down the road. Does anyone know if this is legal? Surely they would need permission and road markings to impose this?

Agree, Waiting restrictions can only be enforced if there is a valid Traffic Regulation Order in place. Your local highway authority (local council if unitary, county council otherwise) will have records of all the TRO's, and are obliged to let you know whether one is in place and what the restrictions are.

I'd still be a bit cautious about hacking off a load of mechanics and then leaving your car outside their premises!

I would call your local police station and query this, I'm sure they would be very interested to hear about the problem.
The police won't actually be able to do anything about it (apart from having a polite word), if the No parking sign is painted on a private building. Neither can the local planning authority. it's just a case of finding out if you can park there, and sticking to your rights.

thanks for all the responses. I am convinced these signs  are not enforceable. As you mentioned Beena the main problem is being confronted by the growling mechanics on my return! but i would love to be able to confront them with my rights, so thanks i will look into it with my local authority.
