I had a consultation with a professor in waiting, various scans and a prescription for some heavy duty drugs. Turned out some weeks later that I was slap bang in the middle of a mid-life crisis and a charming trainee psychologist cured me with a CD and a booklet.
I suppose what I'm suggesting is that they should seek a second (possibly third) opinion.

Starbuck.....No, it is not illegal for doctors to treat members of their own family.
I have done it all my life and if I get out of my depth then a colleague Consultant will offer a second opinion.
Some doctors take the view that they are too emotionally involved with their own families to *** the situation in an unbiased manner and look to their colleagues for health care of their families.
Didnt bother me though as I could switch my emotion on and off.
