I have the same problem (and the same letters)!
think it is BAD MUG - just trying to prove it though

cant prove that it is BAD MUG - can anoyone else agree or otherwise?

I too am perplexed - have found Hag-smash in Cassel's Dict of Slang (Ulster sl. for botched job) Could it be a variant thereof ? Wonder where Mr Mepham found it?
Ahhh! think I might have it ! From same source CAGMAG -"anything second-rate" "rubbish".......I wonder???
Cag mag is evidently black country dialect for rotting meat - if you stretch it a bit?????
CAG MAG seems to be everywhere.  I've just found it on a website about Victorian London.  It says it means bad/foul meat.  As you've said - if we stretch the meaning a bit...!
The thought of all we frustrated wordsmiths"stretching" rotten meat is a mind-boggling way to use up Saturday!!!
Reckon it's cag mag - googling (out of a mere 490,000 sites!) uses the word "botch" - maybe compiler comes from Lincs?
oops, sorry, Mr M, I meant Bucks !!
Cassell dictionary of slang quotes cagmag (one word) as 'anything valueless or second rate'  'refuse, rubbish, odds and ends.  I am going for it!!
Roll on next Saturday when we find out if we are right!
MSN Encarta says cagmag means "poorly done" Yippee

Collins  English Dictionary defines Cagmag (one word) as done shoddily; left incomplete.  A word of Middle English dialect.

This seems to be the answer.

I have to admit I have never heard the expression but I am glad that JRB found it in Encarta. All I found was bad meat.... Still, I can stop looking now!
