What's the best way (aside from not) of riding in the winter?

Things like snow and ice, as well as the temperature are all welcomed.

In my younger days when I had first started working in the City I used to do the commute on a bike, because I HATED the train commute, and found layers were the way to go on the extremeties - a couple of pairs of marigolds under a decent pair of winter gloves and a couple of pairs of tights - yes tights - under a pair of jeans which in turn were under a pair of all weathers - didn't really find leathers worked as well. A decent scarf wrapped around your neck and under your lid and a balaclava. Took forever to get ready, but it worked for me. A mate of mine use to also wear a dustbin liner next to his skin - never tried it myself. 10 years on I've turned into a bit of a pansy, and won't even go out on a bike if there's even a hint of rain!!!

If you have money to spend then you can fit heated handlebar grips.  Your fingers are always the coldest bits.

Unless you have a trail bike I wouldn't advise riding in snow.  But apart from that sort of weather I ride in all seasons.  Be warned, road salt will make a real mess of aluminium engine cases.
