Yep, the only medicines which affect the contraceptive pill are some antibiotics and I think certain herbal remedies.  the only other way it would be affected is if you were to be sick.  All common cough and cold remedies are fine to take.
Vitamin C in high doses can affect the pill's absorption if taken together - so be very careful with any remedies which contain vitamin supplementation.  Most Lemsip-type-things do contain this.
The only way to be certain is to ask your local pharmacist. Pharmacists are a much under-used resource - Within their field of expertise they are much better qualified than any doctor to answer your questions, so why not pay a visit? (Some pharmacists are even happy to give instant advice over the phone - Try getting a doctor to do that!).

as a general rule something like a contraceptive pill will be tested to make sure it's effectiveness isn't decreased by just anything.  Antibiotics and St. Johns Wort are two definate no nos, but you'll be perfectly ok with things like paracetamol and such like.

As a side, I'd recommend mixing honey and lemon and taking 2 painkillers for a cold.  Lemsips taste horrible in my opinion and paracetamol is the main ingrediant.
