Hello,

Does anyone know where I can buy Prawn Ballichow in the UK? Patak's used to make one but haven't sold it for years. I loved it. I've found some recipes but none seem to work out as the Ballichow I rememeber. I can get it mail-order from Fern's in the US but post/shipping-cost is prohibitive for a jar of pickle.

Any help appreciated.

Thanks,

Jooster

You could try Mrs Bassa's Indian Kitchen. The retail outlet is in Wimbledon Chase so, if you know anyone in South West London, you could get them to buy a jar & send it to you. Otherwise you'll have to use the mail order service. (There's a minimum order of 4 jars of pickle but these can be different varieties).

The link is here:

Hoping this helps,

Here's another one for you:

Wally's Deli' is based in Wales (just down the road from Cardiff Central Station) but they offer online sales too. (The product stocked is the Fern's one, referred to above).

I've always found Ferns to be a better product then Pataks, especially the Chilli pickle...

Try asian cash and carrys in the area, e.g.

 East End Foods plc
58-66, Darwin St, Birmingham, West Midlands B12 0TP
Tel: 0121 772 5201

Type cash and carry into Yell.com, and look for an asian looking one

I'm glad Normyc seems rather more alert than I am!

I should have recognised that Wednesbury is in the West Midlands which is home to many members of the Asian community. So, given that we've now established that the product you require is definitely available in the UK, it shouldn't be much of a problem tracking this pickle down.

If I was going to use yell.com, I'd probably choose a different category to 'cash & carry' simply because cash & carry outlets often expect you to buy stuff by the case. (I'd try 'delicatessens' or 'grocers'). But, in practice, it would be far simpler to head for one of the main centres of the Asian community in the West Midlands and walk down the High Street. You'll probably find a dozen shops selling what you want.

(I won't suggest any exact areas to try as my knowledge of the West Midlands is a bit sketchy. If it had been London, I would have suggested Southall - one of my favourite places: wonderful smells, wonderful colours, wonderful food and wonderful people!).

WOW! What a response! 7 answers in 10 hours! Thanks everyone!

I know the East End outlet in Birmingham so I'll give them a try. I also have friends/contacts around the country who could pick up a jar at either Wimbledon or Cardiff, Failing that, I'll try web-ordering.

I have tried many outlets in areas with large Asian communites. Smethwick is brilliant where there's greek, Turkish, Iranian and Iraqi stores. It's a fab area for a foody shopper.... and the prices are sooooo cheap. Handworth is brilliant for the same & Caribean food too.

Most Asian shops I've been to have heard of (& offered me recipes for) Prawn Ballichow but none stocked (or knew of another store who stocked) it.

BIG thanks again,

PS Although I love this pickle in its own right, mix a teaspoon of it with a 2-3 tbs of mayo & it makes an absolutely FAB salad sauce (or use it on burgers instead of Mayo & ketchup).

Did you find your Ballichow?

NormyC,

Hi! And sorry. No I haven't looked any further.... but I will do.

Reasons? Where to start? Daughter's birthday. Son being a complete ****. Ex wife & I get on REALLY well & she's having to put up with him at the moment.... & I want to do something to help....

Oh, god! A million & 1 things going on. Don't want to bore you with it all.

Truly grateful to everyone for the Ballichow info. I will look into getting some. Just a question of priorities, I suppose

Matt, Jooster
